SANTORINI ...one of the most impressive islands in the world
Great poets have sung its praises.... a 4000-year-old history.
"...And the eternal rock continues to stand, strong and majestic,
rising proudly from the sea and guarding well the secrets of Atlantis..."
Regarded by many people as the most mysterious and scenic places on earth,
Santorini reaches out to you, captivates your spirit and grabs you by the
heart from the minute you step on its soil.
Nested in the heart of the Aegean, the island is legendary in its wild
and unreserved beauty, once named Kallisti by the Argonauts
(the most beautiful).
The Caldera, which is in fact the rim of the carter, view offers the most breathtaking and stunning view of all
islands in Greece.
It is one of the few places on the planet that offers both sunsets and
moonsets from exactly the same perch.
With its marvellous climate and perfect observation conditions, its prominent
caldera, it is also an eldorado for volcanologists.
Santorini is the most southern Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea.
Over the centuries her name changed several times: Kallisti, Strongyli and
Thera.
The name Santorini was given to the island when it was invaded by the Venetians in honour of Saint Irene, Santa Irini.
We refer to Santorini as one island, but actually it is a collection of five
islands.
Santorini (Thera), the main island is surrounded by Thirassia and
Aspronissi (parts of the ancient Strongyli) as well as by the two
volcanic islands Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni.
The two volcanic islands appeared much later as a result of various
eruptions the first one in 157 BC and the last one in 1950. Read further about The story of Atlantis
